The Race to Build Data Centers in Space

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving demand for computing power at an unprecedented pace, and some of the world's largest technology companies are looking beyond Earth for the next generation of data centers. What once sounded like science fiction has become a serious industry, with several companies now testing orbital computing platforms.

One of the pioneers is Starcloud, a Washington-based startup that launched its first orbital data center satellite in late 2025. Equipped with an Nvidia H100 graphics processor, the satellite successfully trained a small artificial intelligence language model while in orbit, demonstrating that advanced computing can be performed in space. The company has since attracted significant investment and has proposed an ambitious constellation of thousands of computing satellites.
SpaceX is also pursuing the concept on a much larger scale. The company has outlined plans to develop orbital data center infrastructure that could eventually support massive AI workloads. Other technology firms, including Google and several emerging aerospace startups, are exploring similar projects, hoping to capitalize on the growing demand for AI computing.
The appeal of space-based data centers lies in their potential efficiency. Satellites operating in continuous sunlight could generate abundant solar power while eliminating many of the cooling challenges faced by terrestrial facilities. With no need for large amounts of water and fewer land-use constraints, orbital computing could offer long-term environmental and economic advantages if the technology proves viable.
Despite the excitement, significant hurdles remain. Launching hardware into orbit is still expensive, and computer systems must withstand constant exposure to radiation and the harsh conditions of space. Many experts believe these engineering challenges must be solved before orbital data centers can compete economically with traditional facilities on Earth.
Over the next several years, the industry's success will depend on whether these early experiments demonstrate reliable, long-term performance. If they do, data centers in space could become one of the most significant technological developments of the AI era, fundamentally changing how the world's computing infrastructure is built.
