Robots at Work: Where Automation Is Actually Happening vs. Where It's Still a Demo Reel

Every few weeks, a viral video shows a humanoid robot folding laundry or flipping a burger, and the internet declares the robot takeover has arrived. The reality, according to the people actually deploying this technology, is far more uneven — genuinely transformative in a couple of industries, and mostly theater in others.



Warehousing: the real deal


If there's one place humanoid and industrial robots have moved decisively past hype, it's the warehouse floor. Agility Robotics' Digit — a roughly $250,000 bipedal robot — is already working in active pilot programs with major logistics companies, including Amazon, lifting and carrying standard totes, navigating ramps, and transferring items between storage racks and conveyors. An independent industry analysis identified named, real deployments across manufacturing too: BMW using Figure's robots at its Spartanburg plant, Mercedes-Benz running Apptronik's Apollo, Tesla operating Optimus in its own factories, and similar rollouts at BYD, Geely, Foxconn, and Airbus. Analysts note this is the clearest near-term fit for the technology precisely because the environment can be fully mapped, the task can be tightly defined, and human workers can be kept outside a safety boundary — the same "structured material handling" formula that made industrial robotic arms viable decades ago.


Fast food: more real than most people assume, still far from staff-free


Fast food automation has quietly moved well past pilot-only territory. White Castle has deployed Miso Robotics' Flippy fry-cook robot at more than 100 locations, with the company announcing plans to expand the system to roughly a third of its nearly 350 restaurants; the robots can now handle up to 360 baskets of fried food a day, freeing staff to focus on hospitality and order accuracy instead. Chipotle, Sweetgreen, and Wing Zone have all tested or deployed comparable systems for bowl assembly, salad prep, and tortilla chip production, with one bowl-assembly robot reportedly hitting 180 bowls per hour in testing. Still, restaurant industry analyst John Gordon offers a useful gut check: "We are at the very, very early stage. The return on investment has not been proven." The honest read is that fast food robotics is real and expanding, but it's automating specific back-of-house stations — fryers, salad lines — not replacing entire kitchen crews.


Elder care: the hype leader, the deployment laggard


This is where the gap between marketing and reality is widest. One industry analysis put it bluntly: elder care "remains merely a research project dressed as a product." A March 2026 scoping review in JMIR Aging examined 59 studies covering 25 humanoid robots used in care settings and found real-world use, but concentrated in social interaction and companionship — robots like Pepper and NAO — not hands-on physical caregiving. Consumer-facing home robots like 1X's NEO are now taking $200 deposits toward a roughly $20,000 unit, but even its own marketing materials describe this as an early snapshot of fast-moving technology, not a mature care solution.


The throughline: robots are already doing paid, repeatable work wherever a task is structured and predictable — warehouses, fry stations, factory lines. They remain mostly a demo wherever a room is unpredictable and a person's safety is on the line — homes, clinics, elder care. The disruption isn't uniform, and isn't coming all at once; it's arriving one repetitive task at a time, exactly where the environment allows it.
